LEGO Super Mario Gets Its First Minifigures: Seven Sets Out 1 January 2027
Nintendo and LEGO have answered years of fan requests by introducing traditional minifigures to the Super Mario theme for the first time. Since 2020, the theme relied on electronic interactive figures - LEGO Mario, Luigi, and Peach - that scanned colour-coded bricks and displayed reactions on LCD screens. That changes 1 January 2027, with seven new sets revealed at gamescom Cologne featuring ten character minifigures alongside classic construction mechanics.
Super Mario remains Nintendo's flagship franchise, spanning nearly four decades since 1985. From 2D platformers to Mario Kart's chaotic racing, the series has defined gaming for generations. Characters like Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Yoshi, and Toad rank among the most recognisable in the industry. Translating that universe into LEGO form has proven both successful and challenging - the interactive figures appealed to builders wanting screen-based gameplay, but collectors and traditionalists craved standard minifigures for display and construction.
Launching January 2027, this wave delivers exactly that. Ten characters debut as minifigures: Mario, Surfing Mario, Fire Mario, Luigi, Bowser Jr., Toad, Yoshi, Koopa Troopa, Bowser, and a brick-built Cow. Two sets carry 4+ age ratings - a first for the theme, signalling sets designed for younger builders alongside experienced collectors.
Entry sets start small. Mario's Pipe Jump combines 61 pieces for £8.99 / $9.99 / €9.99, featuring Mario and Goomba with a lever catapult mechanism for launching Goomba and collecting coins.
Racing with Mario ramps up the action with 84 pieces for £12.99 / $14.99 / €14.99. Mario's go-kart launches shells at banana and cone obstacles - pure Mario Kart mayhem in brick form.
Mario's Beach Adventures brings seasonal flair with 196 pieces for £17.99 / $19.99 / €19.99. Surfing Mario takes centre stage alongside a refreshment stand, sun lounge, and Sidestepper enemy.
Luigi & Bowser Jr.'s Race marks one of two 4+ sets with 104 pieces for £26.99 / $29.99 / €29.99. Luigi and Bowser Jr. pilot their own karts in direct competition - simplified building for younger hands without sacrificing personality.
Yoshi at Mario's House serves as the other 4+ entry point with 147 pieces for £34.99 / $39.99 / €39.99. A multi-room house features a garden, bedroom, and kitchen, plus a green slide. Mario, Yoshi, and Toad gather inside.
Bowser's Rumbling Race offers mid-range appeal with 409 pieces for £54.99 / $59.99 / €59.99. Four iconic karts take the track: Bowser's Bruiser, Toad's Zoom Buggy, Goomba's Biddybuggy, and a brick-built Cow's Tune Thumper. Shell launchers and flaming details bring chaos to every race.
Fire Mario & Bowser's Castle stands as the collection's centrepiece with 850 pieces for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 (approximately 10.6p per piece). Fire Mario faces off against Bowser and Koopa Troopa inside an imposing castle complete with lava balls, hidden traps, and Princess Peach held prisoner.
With seven sets from £8.99 to £89.99, a 4+ entry point for younger fans, and characters that span the breadth of the Mushroom Kingdom, LEGO has finally delivered the minifigure-scale Mario theme that builders have wanted since 2020.
