Twelve Bags: LEGO 71053 Shrek Collectible Minifigures Confirmed for 1 September
The original Shrek came out in 2001. LEGO made a handful of tie-in sets around the early films, then left the licence largely alone for the best part of two decades. Shrek Collectible Minifigures Series (71053) changes that: announced on 22 July 2026, it arrives on 1 September priced at £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99 per mystery bag, recommended for ages six and over. It will be available through LEGO Shop at Home in the US, Canada, and UK.
Thirteen figures are spread across twelve bags. The apparent discrepancy is down to Donkey being packaged alongside Fiona rather than occupying his own slot. The full cast: Shrek, Fiona (with Donkey), Pinocchio, Gingy, Dragon, Puss in Boots, Thelonious, Big Bad Wolf, Merlin, Lord Farquaad, Fairy Godmother, and Prince Charming. That covers the principal cast across all four films without obvious gaps, and each figure comes with at least one themed accessory.
Thelonious - Farquaad's hulking executioner - is a pleasantly obscure inclusion that suggests genuine familiarity with the films on the design team. Pinocchio and Big Bad Wolf have broad crossover appeal and sit comfortably alongside Castle-adjacent displays. The human characters translate well to minifigure form overall, though flesh-coloured parts on Merlin and Fairy Godmother limit their usefulness outside this theme - par for the course with licensed human figures.
Community reaction to Shrek and Fiona themselves has been more mixed. Shrek's head was reportedly intended to pair with an expanded torso element similar to the one used for Hagrid, but that piece does not appear in the final product. Without it, the proportions look off, and Fiona has the same problem.
At £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99 a bag, picking up a handful is low-risk. A complete collection first time round would theoretically cost £41.88, but blind-bag odds make that an optimistic scenario. Full boxes typically contain three complete sets, so buying a couple of boxes is the most practical route to a full display. A minifig scanner takes care of duplicates if you prefer to go bag by bag.
If you want something larger to sit alongside the figures, 72423 Shrek, Donkey & Puss in Boots launched in June 2026 and pairs naturally with 71053 - the two sets feel designed in tandem. No dedicated building sets have been announced around 71053: no swamp, no Duloc, no Far Far Away castle. With Shrek 5 due in 2027, LEGO will almost certainly revisit the licence before long.
September's timing suits the format well - school-return season, birthday money freshly received. And for adults, a Shrek CMF series is the sort of thing you quietly buy a complete set of and display on a bookshelf while maintaining, firmly, that it is for the children.
