Ryan Gosling Gets His First LEGO Minifigure in Project Hail Mary Set
Well, this is rather unexpected - LEGO has just announced Project Hail Mary (11389), a microscale spacecraft from the upcoming film starring Ryan Gosling. What makes this particularly interesting is that it marks Gosling's debut as a LEGO minifigure, playing astronaut Ryland Grace.

The set clocks in at 830 pieces for £99.99, which works out to roughly 12p per piece - not bad for an Icons set, especially one that's likely to have some intricate detailing. The microscale approach is clever here, allowing LEGO to capture the essence of the Hail Mary spacecraft without requiring the massive footprint of a minifigure-scale build.

What caught my eye is the inclusion of Rocky as a brick-built figure. For those who've read Andy Weir's brilliant novel, Rocky is quite possibly one of the most endearing alien characters in recent science fiction. Translating that into LEGO form must have been quite the challenge for the designers.

The timing feels spot-on with the film's release, and at 830 pieces, this sits comfortably in that sweet spot where it's substantial enough for adult builders but not so overwhelming that older kids couldn't tackle it with some help. The microscale format also means it won't dominate your shelf space, which is always a consideration.
For fans of space-themed builds or the source material, this looks like a solid addition to the Icons lineup. The fact that we're getting both a minifigure and a brick-built alien suggests LEGO has put some thought into making this more than just a simple spaceship model. Pre-orders are live now ahead of the 1st March release.
