Back to the Future DeLorean Returns to Speed Champions - And It's About Time
Great Scott! LEGO has just announced the Speed Champions Time Machine from Back to the Future (77256), and it's stirring up quite a bit of nostalgia for those of us who remember the original CUUSOO DeLorean from way back in 2013.
This new 357-piece set launches on New Year's Day for around £23, pretty standard value for Speed Champions. What makes this particularly clever is that you can build it as either the regular DeLorean or switch it to the flying configuration from Part II, complete with those iconic folding wheels.
The attention to detail looks spot-on from the official images. You've got the time circuits, flux capacitor glowing away inside, and Mr. Fusion mounted on the back. The set includes minifigures of both Marty McFly and Doc Brown, which is a nice touch that the original larger set didn't have.
What's interesting is how this fits into the current Speed Champions lineup. We've been getting more movie cars lately, and at this price point, it's accessible enough for kids while still appealing to adult fans who missed out on that earlier, much pricier version. The minifigure scale also means it'll sit nicely with other Speed Champions sets rather than dominating your display space.
The only slight concern is whether 357 pieces will give enough detail at this scale, but Speed Champions has generally been quite good at maximising what you can achieve within these constraints. For anyone who's been eyeing those expensive second-hand CUUSOO sets on eBay, this is definitely worth waiting for instead.
